Cleaning Ganges river - the challenge

Most people know that it is the most polluted river in the World that sustains such a humongous population. It is the most sacred river for the Hindus.

There are tons of internet resources that details the efforts and tribulations. It is not a easy task given the importance of the river.

There this cultural thing in addition to other variables. It is a long list of things that needs to be implemented and quite discouraging. I can see that the following should happen before you declare it safe.

1. Provide toilets and showers. Shower first and then take a dip in the river.
2. Offer flowers and leaves in filter bags that can be easily fished out
3. No burning of the bodies. All cremation must be monitored by a corruption-proof third party including a healthcare worker, a religious worker, a social worker. No harassment of any kind.
4. River should not be used for washing clothes, cleaning oneself after toilet, etc.
5. A small basic fee for all the pilgrims that can be used for river maintenance.
6. Monitor all entities discharging into the river and take punitive actions. This is especially important to industries discharging dangerous chemicals.
7. No dumping of construction materials, debris and domestic & industrial waste.

Any other fancy thing like a museum, a visitor center, etc is not good enough.

Varanasi is an ancient city which has continuously populated by people. Treat it with respect.
