Vive les relations Taiwan-France!

France supports Taiwan in a big way with excellent support.

The highlighted info from the above:

A vote by the French Senate in favor of a resolution backing Taiwan's participation in the World Health Organization (WHO) and three other major international organizations has triggered an angry response from China.  In response, Beijing is blocking Taiwan's entry, arguing it is not an independent state.

At least Maharashtra seems to be getting out of the misery

It has been a very tragic month in April 2021 for the whole of India. China mocking and ridiculing India for its failing and the BBC videos flashing clip after clip of the funeral pyres, mostly in Delhi. It has been an unbearable and surrealistic experience worthy of any of the horror movies of recent times.

However, from the beginning of May, things appear to be under some improvement in Maharashtra. Things in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu still need to work bringing down the numbers. I see a tiny bend in the Tamil Nadu case (perhaps it is what I am imagining) but Karnataka has a long way to go.

Are we finally seeing the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel?  It is too soon to say.

Did you know that Pandas are property of China?

Well, you may, but I did not. I was surprised.

It appears China leases these animals and the proceeds are used to conserve these animals.  Even pandas born outside China belong to China. In effect, they are property of China.

Although they are not endangered, they need a lot of care and considered vulnerable. According to World Wildlife Fund (WWF) there are about 1864 pandas in the wild and some 400 in captivity. I am not sure whether they live anywhere other than Southern China (near Tibetan border) but there are references to their presence in Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar in the past.

More here:

Please give generously to the conservation effort.

Solidarity!

My Aussie Brothers and sisters, keep up the fight with the uncompromising Chinese administration. They can't blackmail you with Wine sanctions. You have many friends, world-wide.

Actually, Australian wine is in par with the best of the wine anywhere. It's Chinese who will miss the wine.

In response to this solidarity call, I am redirecting my wine purchase to Australia with which I have visceral connection.

What's happening to the TikTok's deal?

After all the ban on TikTok by President Trump, the issue of allow/ban TikTok is not yet done. TikTok will have another 15 days (Nov.27) to convince that it is not a security risk. It has to convince the US National Security officials. If it gets the blessing then the Oracle/Walmart deal may be approved. Users can access the app till the deadline.

More here:

Also, the deal with American companies need approval from China.

But as to whether it is really a security risk, you may get convinced if you watch this video.

Video here:

Also, the senate hearings on the Heritage Link above.

The argument that it cannot bee banned because if is used by so many worldwide does not hold a drop of water, if it cannot pass the security risk. In fact, precisely for the reason that it is used by so many, it is extremely risky to allow this app.

India claims this is fake news from China

The Times reported that China has used a microwave weapon in Ladakh to repel Indian soldiers from their position, based on the report of a talk given by a Chinese professor Jin Canrong of Renmin university in Beijing.

Details here:  https://hodentek.blogspot.com/2020/11/chinese-use-microwave-weapons-to-repel.html

However, Indian army has denied that any such event took place during the confrontation in Ladakh.

https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/india-on-reports-that-china-used-microwave-weapons-in-ladakh-fake-news-2326640

It appears more like a 'fake news' circulated by China. Most news in China are monitored and it is highly likely the hews was fake. Visit the site for more fake news: https://pib.gov.in/factcheck.aspx

Looking at the logic of this announcement it appears this 'fake' news was more for domestic consumption. It definitely makes it appear China having superior technology and using judiciously  to 'avoid firing bullets'.

This said in news from such such areas of conflict may need to be taken with a (sizeable) grain of salt.

Microsoft wants TikTok and Oracle wants it too

Oracle is the latest onboard to buy TikTok.

https://tinyurl.com/y6bd67hk

They don't have all the money, but they will team up with General Atlantic and Sequoia Capital, it appears. Sequoia already has a piece in ByteDance. Oracle is a supporter of President Trump. Will it help to buy it faster?

Is the rush to buy TikTok, the same as the desire for the forbidden fruit?

Wednesday, August 05, 2020

Where is Microsoft going with TikTok?

I am not sure of where this TikTok dealing is going. It looks like 50/50.

Mostly, American teens like TikTok. Americans have an inexhaustible desire for short time results, and 15 sec-videos are a perfect fit. Are 15 seconds long enough to make an impression about an Ad? Unless Microsoft has other ideas to integrate TikTok with its enterprise and cloud empires, it may be a flop for ad revenue. Twitter is trying for a long time to monetize, but the path has not been easy.

Microsoft trying to buy a media company is a no brainer. However, does it have to be TikTok?  Microsoft will be in the next congressional hearings list for sure. If Microsoft is buying TikTok for creating jobs, you need to take a deep breath. How many jobs can it create, realistically?

Can Microsoft succeed in monetizing TikTok? Or is Microsoft trying to buy TikTok to remain in the good books of China? I wonder.
Is Microsoft buying trouble in its TikTok purchase? Probably it is. Satya earned great respect after the demise of Windows Phone and the ascendency of Azure. Probably, Satya will be putting his career on the block, by purchasing TikTok.

There has been some talk of Microsoft buying a portion of TikTok, and another of Microsoft allowing others with some minor interest in Tiktok. This is not going to convince people about security. A clean cord-cutting is necessary. I think President Trump will be happy if the whole thing comes to the USA.

I saw this on the BBC site(https://www.bbc.com/news/business-53628108).

I quote, "Microsoft emphasized that it would ensure that 'all private data of TikTok's American users' was transferred to and remained in the US.
Further, it would ensure that any data currently stored or backed up outside the country would be deleted from servers after it was transferred to US datacenters. It also said that Microsoft 'appreciates the US Government's and President Trump's involvement as it continues to develop strong security protections for the country.
"
Well,
A. These assurances may not have any intrinsic value. What prevents TikTok from retaining copies of the files?

B. All Chinese companies need to provide the communist party any data it requests. How can you ensure 'that any data stored or backed up will be deleted from servers after it was transferred? The lack of transparency is what lead the US to distrust China in the first place. Does Microsoft expect TikTok to delete the information they already have? Not by a long shot.

C. I am sure President Trump knows China better than Satya.

I watch and watch as the story unfolds in the coming days and weeks.

Great news from Cambodia

Cambodia's Siem Reap province issued an order banning the buying, selling, and butchering of dogs for food. This is a great step towards stopping animal cruelty. I do hope they extend it to the whole of Cambodia.

Border intrusions by Chinese into Indian territory

Recently Chinese have increased their intrusions into India using the opportune moment while India is in the midst of a coronavirus pandemic.

IoT will get a big boost if Laser Egg takes off

The Chinese are really worried about their environment, which looks pretty bad right now. The winds are not helpful, they drive the pollution across the seas to Japan and Korea.

More importantly Chinese are concerned about themselves. by monitoring pollution using the Laser Egg (a very fancy name: http://www.origins-china.com/) common man on the street is montioring the weather to see for himself what it is like, not waiting for the Government data.
But it could really take on and democratize the pollution question getting it out of the hands of politicians and into the hands of the people. Laser egg will get the data people need to so that they can plan their actions.
Here is a picture of the Laser Egg from the Chinese site,

Here is a video.
