Did you know that Pandas are property of China?

Well, you may, but I did not. I was surprised.

It appears China leases these animals and the proceeds are used to conserve these animals.  Even pandas born outside China belong to China. In effect, they are property of China.

Although they are not endangered, they need a lot of care and considered vulnerable. According to World Wildlife Fund (WWF) there are about 1864 pandas in the wild and some 400 in captivity. I am not sure whether they live anywhere other than Southern China (near Tibetan border) but there are references to their presence in Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar in the past.

Do you know of any other country claiming ownership to a living species?
