Do you want to manually migrate your MS Access Database to Oracle?
Business needs often necessitate data migration from a smaller, less secure database to a higher end, faster database server with a more reliable availability. A typical scenario is the migration of data from a desktop sized database such as MS Access or Fox Pro to any other higher end database servers such as MS SQL Server, Oracle, DB2 or SQL Anywhere Server. Most of the database vendors provide tools to migrate from third party to their own database servers. In his three previous articles, the author has described the built-in tools to migrate from MS Access to SQL 2000 Server, SQL Anywhere Server, and from Oracle 10G XE to SQL Anywhere server.

Must read article on VB.NET Integration
Microsoft Visual Studio has attracted a lot of attention from many vendors and you can find add-ins that give direct access to third party programs. This is a much needed synergy as businesses grow and embrace a multiplicity of products.
This article shows how you can develop a VB.NET 2.0 application using the integration features provided by the SQL Anywhere database. The SQL Anywhere tools are directly accessible without going out of the Visual Studio 2.0 IDE. The article describes a window application with two examples developed with this easy to use integration interface.

This is like a ‘Hello World’ example for my XML articles. The sample document shown below is a simple XML document which represents 4 (sometimes 5) students who took a programming class. It is well formed and simple to use as you can see from these articles. I used it often because it is on my local IIS and easy to grab.

Do you still want to buy the HP Office Jet 6210 All-in-one?
Probably you may not be able to, even if you want to. It is not sold anymore according to a chat I had with HP to day.
This was my experience yours may be different.
I bought this much publicized product after giving my Cannon 4400 which had served me for several years to some non-profit organization. This OfficeJet 6210 All-in-one functioned all right. I am not a heavy user as I care for the 'trees'.
Recently I wanted to change the black cartridge as it had run out of ink. I bought the ink cartridge from my Amazon.com shop at:
http://astore.amazon.com/httpwwwange06-20/105-0030929-3964432?%5Fencoding=UTF8&node=4
I tried to change the newly arrived cartridge. The machine gave a strange message. It did not accept the cartridge. I called HP and went on a chat doing all kinds of suggested help. Finally the chat-help told me that it is a hardware problem and she cannot help any more. I am rethinking whether investing in a HP printer is worth it. They seem to change their product faster than Microsoft changes its software. It's incredible. The option the chat suggested was for me to buy the following:
l. REFURBISHED OJ 6310 UPGRD UNIT HP EXCHANGE TRADE UP GROUND SHIP $134.99.
2. The repair option (for online) for 119.99.
Do I like the options? You guessed right.
I suggest next time you shop for a printer look for printers other than HP printers. It is not just worth it.
About leaking HP Printer Cartridges:
While chatting with the HP Specialist I heard her mention that when the ink runs out, the cartridge leaks. But why? The color cartridge in my printer had leaked. What is your experience? Would you like to share?

Configuring Web email's SMTP and POP servers
You do not have an ISP's Mail account , or you want a web based SMTP/POP access on your Laptop, but you do have a email client, no problem. You can use GMail (or Yahoo Mail) to send / receive emails provided you have a Google (Yahoo) Email account.
This is not special to Google (Yahoo), you can do this with many others. Do not configure two email accounts as you will get twice the emails, one from each account.
The following recipe (not mine, but Google's) does this set up for you. But before you do this, you need to login to your email account and once there, go to the Settings page. In Settings click on the menu item, Forwarding and POP. Now Click on the radio button, Enable POP for all mail that arrives from now. After this follow one of the following:
1. You can download Gmail's GmailConfig.exe and run it from your computer
2. You open up your email client's Account from the menu item, Tools (the following screen shots are for the email client, Microsoft Outlook Express 6) and make the appropriate entries into some of the tabbed pages. For the ones not shown here, the defaults are used.
In the page opened by your General tab you need to type in your Gmail account as shown. You can give your own name for the first box.
In the page opened by the Server's tab you type in as shown in the next figure. Do not forget the check marks.
In the page opened by the Advanced tab make these entries and click OK. The account is now ready.
This is all that is needed.
'Happy Emailing.

Do they wear bullet proof vests in Indiana outdoor markets?
Getting elected is not easy. Costs a lot of money. Perhaps several 100's of millions. Also you need to stretch the truth a great deal. The following appeared in New York Times today. The picture seems to support the merchants. To quote, (It was) “like a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summertime,”
Well the picture shows a different story.

How to return a character with an accent in JSON?
While ~ by itself renders correctly, the letter with tilde will not.
You should treat it as a special character.
For example:
{"wclass":[{"student":{"id":"1"},"name": "ñinda Jones",
"legacySkill":"Access, VB 5.0"},{"student":{"id":"2"},"name":"Adam Davidson",
"legacySkill":"Cobol, MainFrame"},{"student":{"id":"3"},"name":"Charles Boyer",
"legacySkill":"HTML, XML"}]}
will render correctly as in(IE as well as FireFox browsers):
This is json text

Battle of Wizards: Dojo vs. Microsoft
Feeling a bit ashamed of a flashy title, but forgiveness is assumed.
That apart, the Dojo wizard does a neat job with this client code. It works as well as Microsoft's Server control, perhaps even better. Is this a part of web 2.0? The tutorial develops the same pages in both and compares them for eye candy effects, speed, cross-browser use, etc. Please follow this link to the article:

Accordion Pane: Microsoft AJAX compared to Dojo
It is not apples to apples. One is Open source and the other is Proprietary. Even with Microsoft AJAX control tool kit, browsers differ somewhat. IE7.0, Opera 9.01 and FireFox are compared. If you need the project file let me know

This VS 2003 article meant as a tutorial deals only with connecting to databases on a SQL 2000 server. Various connection options are discussed and their implementation details are shown. Data retrieval and data manipulation will be discussed in a future article. Only very simple, but basic code to test the connection is used, and each case uses a different ASPX page. This article is self-contained and complete, a copy of the projects in zip format is provided for download.

Duty free headache
I tried to buy a liter of Chivas Regal at Nagoya airport in Japan at the duty free shop and I was told that Northwest Airlines does not allow passengers to carry liquids on board. However, it turns out you may buy from Northwest once you are on the plane.
If you do purchase one on the aircraft, you will soon find that at Detroit where you will be connecting to a domestic destination, you will be asked to check-in the bottle as a baggage. Now you need to find a baggage to put in your bottle and then take it to a Northwest desk so that he can check it in. You will end up doing this, assuming you have enough time to catch the connecting flight.
This is a truly frustrating experience. One more reason to give up the booze.

Dojo TabContainer in 3 browsers
All browsers are not created equal (in fact they are created unequal).
The Dojo TabContainer displays tabbed pages with a variety of content placed in them in content panes which are containers for content.
Many web site especially those that have a lot of information on them such as the eCommerce sites have a need for a large number of tabbed pages. How does a large number of tabs render when browsed. The picture shows how the three browsers render a resized web page with these user interfaces.
Mini conclusion: FireFox 2.0 and Opera 9.01 does better than IE 7.0
Global Warming and the wars
There were major wars and some are still in progress. Bombs get exploded day after day, bombs are dropped almost every day. How do these contribute to warming and poisoning of our atmosphere.
Who is going to pay for this damage?
Is there an estimate of how much these unfortunate, but inevitable conflicts contribute to global warming?

Data from dojo.io.bind() in three browsers
I have a JSON format of data saved on my IIS server. When I access this using the
dojo.io.bind() the data gets displayed as follows in the three browsers (IE 7.0, FireFox2.0 and Opera 9.0):
[a]: Display with file accessed from a folder
Only IE 7.0 returned the data correctly.
[b]: Display when the file accessed from the intranet site(browsed on the IIS web site)
The writing to the browser was by
dojo.byId('x').innerHTML = data;
Both IE 7.0 and FireFox 2.0 returned the data correctly

Dojo Tutorials - the basic type
These are really simple tutorials that give you a flavour of what dojo toolkit has set out to accomplish. Simpy stated it is awesome. Check out for yourself using this learning guide brought to you by yours truly.
This one is especially for those who use IIS although you can provide any relative reference to the javascript script files that are necessary. This article shows how you can start off and create nice looking buttons and accordion panes. It also shows how they appear in three moderen browsers, IE 7.0, FireFox 2.0 and Opera 9.01.

Escape from the drab looking tooltip text of the windows programs. You may even see a sliding show using marquee (hush, hush). While marquee is not kosher stuff, the dill pickle you will see is every bit tasty.

Do you call this progress?
My brother quit his teaching position in India recently and the reason was the all too familiar mantra, money, money.
Medical schools in India, especially the privately run institutions take huge donations from students at admisison time (thank you, NRI). Once admitted they pass through the system without much of an effort on their part. My brother was ordered by the management not to take too much time of the Post-Graduates' time and harass them or else. This is because the managment has taken a lot of money and a pass is automatic. Attendance is all that is needed.
No wonder few miles out of Bangalore you see billboards such as,MOTTEN AND MEET SHOP METERNATYAND CHID CORE CENRTES and numerous other hilarious ones. You may also access letters to forums from recently 'educated' Indians, and you can have lot more fun.
Raw statistics, conversions and going rate for medical school admissions.
1 lakh = 100000.
1 crore = 10000000
1$=45.00 Rupees approximately
Four years ago a neutro-surgery seat at an institution in the State of Karnataka went for 1.4 crores and a cardio seat went for 1.0 crores. There are lots of aspirants from NRI's children living in USA, Britain, Australia, and the Middel East.
For a country bent on showing off its colours and progress this is pathetic.
Compromise on quality and you are in deep.....

Native support in databases for JSON?
When XML came into vogue Database vendors started providing native support for XML in the form of XML type in addition to the other data types. JSON (Javascript Object Notation)appears to be wire-friendly with a smaller size than equivalent XML although it is not as broadly applicable as XML.
Are we going to see native support for JSON in some form? May be some thing like :
Select * from tableName
for JSON

Water by Deepa Mehta
Wonderful film with great acting and haunting music. Perhaps flute being the simplest of instruments makes the greatest impact. For a moment I thought it was flute by Carlos Nagai. To understand ancient India (well, even now there are pockets where it is practiced) this is a must film.
River could have been a more appropriate title.
