Saguna's Multi-access Edge Computing

MEC is at the forefront of what is happening in the Cloud, IoT, and 5G areas.

Saguna claims the most advanced MEC platform,

"Saguna Open-RAN features fully virtualized software architecture, which can be deployed within the network function virtualization (NFV) environment or on cost-effective commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) servers."

Features the following:
Saguna vEdge: Edge Traffic Engine with Realtime Visibility
Saguna OMA:  Ecosystem Management(MEC Configuration, NFV Integration etc.)
Saguna vGate: Core Network Integration

Here is a video from Saguna site.

Edge computing is trending

Two key players have emerged in Edge Computing, taking computing from Global to Local levels. In the telecommuncation domain(telco) the communication Services Providers(CSPs) such as AT&T, China Mobile, Deutsche Telecom have a strong interest espcially as they move into 5G. In the cloud domain Amazon, Facebook, and Google are pushing hard into this field so as to widen their World Wide  presence.IoT and 5G have been the principle drivers and of course, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have large cloud assets that they will put to good use.

I came across a nice diagram that places all of these in a good prespective. Here is a copy of the diagram from their PDF document.

Amazon AWS Greengrass and IoT

It is a software solution to run local compute, messaging, data caching, syncing, and have Machine Learning inference capabilities.
Using AWS Greengrass connected devices (as in IOT for example) can run AWS Lamda functions, keep device data in sync and communicate with other devices securely in the Internet's unconnected scenario. This way using local compute you can interact with local resources, intermittent connections and updates with air updates.

AWS Greengrass involves both local resources as well as AWS. The development uses the same programming languages.

AWS Greengrass can:
  • filter data so that only necessary data is transacted to the cloud
  • Authenticates and encrypts device data at all points of connection(using AWS IoT Core)

Here is a  video how AWS Greengrass works.

Benefits:

  • Respond to Local events in Near Real-time
  • Operate off line
  • Reduce the Cost of running I0T Applications
  • Simplified Device Programming with AWS Lamda
Nokia's Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) together with AWS Greengrass addresses the Enterprise use-case such as off shore Oil Exploration

Which Mobile Emulator would you use for testing your UWP App?

This is not always clear.

It took a while to figure out this thing. I had Visual Studio 2017 Version 15.5.4 and ran into some design time problems as described in my post.

Following this question taking a suggestion from Stack Overflow, I installed Visual Studio 2017 15.5.6 skipping the suggested 15.5.5. It did help me to avoid the design time problem for a UWP project I was working on. I also updated it to version 15.5.7.

When I tried to view my app on an emulator, I did not find an emulator having used the latest version of Visual Studio in the deployment configuration. . Earlier I did not have this is problem before the upgrade.

Every time , I try to use an emulator to look at my app, I am lead to a Microsoft site for downloading an emulator.

According to UWP Forum on MSDN, there is no hard and fast rule for, 'What emulator with What version of Visual Studio 2017'. It is more to do with the version you are targeting and the build.

You can find this kind of information (you may have agreed for some target version while creating a project, but you can change later, if you need to) in the Project Properties page as shown.

These are the options on my computer.

If you try to change the version (using the drop-down menu, you get this message.

tarVers_3

The project reloads.

Another question that pops up answering the question in the title, is there a emulator running?  This is answered by looking up the Hyper-V Manager and turning on the desired emulator.

tarVers_4

The emulator is on but the deployment fails.

Now I change the target back to the older version.

tarVers_5

The project reloads.

Now I build and deploy to the same, previous emulator, 10.1.14393.0 1080p 6"
Now it deploys to the 6" emulator as shown. The JRelative app is displayed at the top.

tarVers_6

Note: When the emulator is up and running the deployment is faster. It is a productive practice as the OS to start in the emulator takes a tediously long processing time. Another useful tip is keep the Hyper-V manager while developing apps and you need to use an emulator.

I turn off the 6" emulator and turn-on the 5". The next image shows the app deployed to Mobile Emulator 10.1.15254.0 720p 5" 1GB

This comes down to the result that there is no emulator for the OS build version 16299.

Nokia's five camera is rumored

Nokia with HMD Global is setting the stage for a Smart Phone with 5 cameras in a circular format supported by two LED flash. Nokia will probably announce this on Feb 15th ahead of MWC 2018 global event (Barcelona on February 25).

According to this site ,

"Multiple reports suggest that HMD Global will launch Nokia 9 and Android Oreo (Go Edition) based Nokia 1. Apart from these two phones, the company is also said to launch the Nokia 4, Nokia 7, Nokia 8 (2018) and the 4G LTE-enabled model of the Nokia 3310 feature phone"

Huawei is rumored to follow (with P-20 phone) next this band wagon.

Insensitive killing of endangered animals

There are lots of criticisms regarding the visit of Donald Trump Junior to India to promote his family business . I have no problem with that, that is what businesses do, go where the business is. There are politicians questioning the ethics. I am not political and I really do not care, there are courts and the congress to deal with that.

What I am really concerned, is the insensitive nature of the individual. He is a hunter and he hunts innocent endangered animals and feel great about it!

I ask you, what kind of a Mumbaiwala are you if you have to sit with dinner with this person and apply kumkum to his forehead! I ask you, are you a Hindu?

Look at these pictures of elephant killing. I definitely will be offended if Mr.Modi sits down with him for dinner!

I always had this feeling that God Ganesh is  most revered by the Maharashtrians and Mumbaites. Look at the juggernaut at Ganesh festival.

I suppose business comes first.

It is amazing that business can silently do business with this guy who blatantly goes about his killing and getting tilak on his forehead by his Hindu(?) business associates.

It's amazing, I am speechless.

Feb 18 at Blaisdell Concert: Lang Lang, Maxim and Maxim Lando, Joann Falletta conducting

On February 18 I attended the Orchestra event at Honolulu's Blaisdell Concert hall. The hall was packed and people appeared very excited.

The first part of the event was without Lang Lang but the orchestra was conducted by Joann Falletta.
Mussorgsky(Arr.Ravel) - Pictures at an exhibition

2. "The old castle"

3. "Tuileries(Children quarrel after games"

7. "Limoges". The Market(the Great News)"
8. "Catacombs(Roman Tomb)"
9. "The Hut on Hen's Legs(Baba Yaga)"
10. "The Bogatyr Gates (In the Capital in Kiev).

Modest Mussgorsky was inspired after attending the exhibition of paintings from his friend of the artist, Victor Hartmann.

The music was awesome with so many instruments.

The orchestra was the one defined by Maurice Ravel :

"Scored for 3 flutes (3rd doubling piccolo), 2 oboes (2nd doubling English Horn), 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, alto saxophone, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, tympani, glockenspiel, chimes, triangle, tam-tam, rattle, whip, cymbal, snare drum, bass drum, xylophone, celesta, harp, and strings"

During the intermission I went out for a bit of air and lo and behold! the entrance had a throng of people witnessing the 'Dragon Dance', that you can see here.

The second part of the program was the addition of Lang, Lang and his piano partner (left hand), Maxim Lando.

Before the start of the second part, two dragons entered the stage and played with the pianists, the conductor and others of the orchestra. This was a nice touch considering that it was the Chinese New Year season and a renowned Chinese artist performing.

Here is what the dragons did on the stage.

After the dragons left the stage, the following four pieces were played:

Saint-Saens: "Aquaurium" from Carnival des animaux
Tchaikovsky: "Dance of the Sugarplum fairy" from the Nutcracker
Bernstein: "America" from West Side Story
Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue

Awesome evening!

More SQL Operations Stuido features in the Feb 2018 release

Read my previous articles (9) on previous versions.

Download the February (latest) release of Microsoft SQL Operations Studio here.

There are couple of enhancements over the previous release. The following has been fixed or added:

Added Auto-Update Installation feature
Added Connection Dialog ‘Database’ Drop-down
Added functionality for new query tabs keeping active connection
Fixed bugs in SQL Editor and auto-completion

This is the version I have now.

When I update, my version is:

When I launched my previous release, I could access the latest. Clicking on this I could install the latest release.

Set up preparatory stage.

I did not see a drop-down of all databases. It did not find the databases. It just reverted to default in the drop-down.

However, it could keep two query windows open at the same time, maintaining two different connections.
