Machine Translation Update

Some four years ago I had compared Google, Bing and other translators. The translations were far from perfect, in fact inadequate for any useful purpose.

I took the same piece to be translated from Japanese to English and found the results no better.
Both Google and Bing have extended the coverage of languages they can translate to and from but the quality of translation does not appear to have improved.

Perhaps subjecting them to translating from Japanese to English was a bit to severe as they both seem to translate reasonably well from European languages to English.

This from a Japanese newspaper from four years ago.

北澤防衛大臣は、防衛省で記者会見し、福島第一原子力発電所について、19日に続いて、上空から表面温度を測定した結果、3号機の格納容器の上を除いて、1号機から6号機まで、いずれも100度未満で、専門家の分析で、使用済み燃料を保管するプールに水が入っていることを裏付ける貴重なデータになるという見方が示されたことを明らかにしました。

Google translates as follows:

Kitazawa defense minister, and a press conference at the Ministry of Defense, for the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, following the 19th, as a result of the surface temperature was measured from the sky, except for the top of the Unit 3 of the containment vessel, from Unit 1 6 up Unit, both at less than 100 degrees, in the analysis of experts, it has revealed that the view that become valuable data to confirm that the water is in the pool to store the spent fuel has been shown.

Bing does the same as follows:

It expressed the view that valuable data corroborate results press conference in the Ministry of Defense is Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa, Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station about 19, followed by the aerial surface temperature was measured, except on the containment of the No. 3 to no. 1 from No. 6 machines any less than 100 degrees in the expert analysis, storing spent fuel pools containing water that has revealed.
